By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com – There are thirty teams in Major League Baseball – fourteen in the American League and sixteen in the National League. As of yesterday, the season is over for all but the eight teams that qualified for the playoffs. The three American League division champs are the Tampa Bay Rays (East), Minnesota Twins (Central), and Texas Rangers (West), with the New York Yankees as the Wild Card. The three National League Division Champions are the Philadelphia Phillies (East), the Cincinnati Reds (Central), and the San Francisco Giants (West), with the Atlanta Braves as the Wild Card. Three Panamanians who will appear in the playoffs this year. Ángel Chávez is an infielder for the Tampa Bay Rays. Carlos Ruiz (aka “Chooch”) is the starting catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies. And of course the greatest closing pitcher in the history of the game, Mariano “Mo” Rivera will be shutting down the 9th inning for the New York Yankees. Rivera finished the regular season with 33 saves, an ERA of 1.80, and a WHIP of .83, both better than his career averages. He now has 559 total career saves, and right now he is 42 saves behind all time leader Trevor Hoffman who probably finished his professional career yesterday with 601. Mariano Rivera already holds all of the save records for playoffs and World Series play, and this year he will be tacking on to those already impressive accomplishments. I’m from New York. I’m a Yankees fan. We love “Mo.” Can you tell?
