After the news was announced that Panama was removed from hosting the XVII Bolivarian Games, the President of the Republic, Ricardo Martinelli asked sports leaders Miguel Sanchiz and Miguel Vanegas to resign. Through a press release issued by the Ministry of State Communications, the government announced that president Martinelli asked Sanchiz and Vanega to step aside, to allow the interests of the athletes and of the Panamanian people to come before their personal benefits.
Martinelli said Panama’s offer to host the Bolivarian Games in 2013 was rejected by the organizing committee, after the Panamanian government refused to accept the request to enroll in the Public Registry an executive board of directors of the Panamanian Olympic Committee which this organization recognizes, that directed by Miguel Sanchiz. contrary to the provisions of a Supreme Court decision that recognizes Miguel Vanegas as the President of the Panamanian Olympic Committee.

He stressed that the government will seek, in conformity with the provisions of current legislation, to have the decision reversed and to remain as the host of the Bolivarian Games. These statements were made by Ricardo Martinelli during his official tour of Asia. (TVN Noticias)

Editor’s Comment: There has been an internal struggle for control of the Panamanian Olympic Committee for what seems like decades, and it has caused nothing but stress and embarrassment for the government since it started. Really, someone should simply step in and “fix” this problem – and if that takes new legislation or whatever – it needs to happen. This has been going on forever, and the problem needs to go away, one way or the other.
