In going over the crime statistics and police actions taken during 2010, Gustavo Perez, the Director of the National Police, said overall there was a 35% reduction in crime in Panama last year. With respect to drug trafficking, he said that starting from the time he took over as the Chief of Police they have seized a total of 92 tons of drugs. He said they also set a record in the area of the seizure of illegal weapons. According to Perez during 2010 there were more illegal weapons taken off of the streets of Panama than in the previous ten years combined. (Telemetro)

Editor’s Comment: In 2010 there were 709 homicides, compared to 818 in 2009 – meaning 109 less or a reduction of 13.3%. Of course it’s fine to try to celebrate your successes, and in this morning’s interview on channel 13 Telemetro Gustavo Perez said exactly that – they will probably never be able to achieve a year in which there are no murders whatsoever – but that’s the goal – to reduce the amount of all kinds of crime as low as possible. It’s working, Panama is getting safer overall, however there are still pockets where more needs to be done, particularly in the area of home invasion robberies in the interior.
