Panama’s president, Ricardo Martinelli, is contemplating the creation of a new Water Authority with the same strict administrative parameters as the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). The idea, he says, is to “finish the collapse” of the Institute of Aqueducts and National Sewage Systems (Idaan). Martinelli added the objective is to create two entities: one for the production of drinking water, and another for the sewage system. “We have to create a new entity that is removed from politics… as is the Panama Canal,” added the President. The possibility of creating a new institution to replace the current Idaan, as a consequence of the crisis that has had the capital city without drinking water – drew comment from the Minister of the Panama Canal, RĂ³mulo Roux. The minister added it is one of the alternatives that is being analyzed. With regards to the situation of the Chilibre Water Treatement Plant, Minister Roux said the plant is producing 151 million gallons of water daily, of a total maximum daily output of 180 million gallons of water per day. Meanwhile, yesterday the government started the distribution of bottled water purchased to ease the current shortages. The bottles were delivered to the representatives of each area to be distributed. (La Prensa)
