From 4 to 8 March is a major holiday in Panama – Carnival – but authorities shill have not decided whether or not to hold Carnival celebrations in Panama City. Salo Shamah, Minister of Tourism, confirmed he has been working to organize the Carnival celebrations and they are making good progess “as if the Carnival celebrations are going to happen” until the Minister of Health decides whether there will be carnival, he said. The water crisis facing the capital district is the main reason why Carnival is in doubt. He said so far there are two possible routes, Vía España and the coastal strip. Shamah said he will talk with Public Works Minister, Federico Suarez, to use a piece of the coastal strip, because it would be more attractive from tourist point of view. Many citizens have recommended that Carnival be held without the “culecos” (spraying water on the crowd during the day) to keep from wasting drinking water on this activity. However, Shamah said the Culecos are part of our character and in no way affects the water problem. (Telemetro)
