Panama’s Third Superior Prosecutor Sofanor Espinosa returned today to the facilities of the Metropolitan Hospital Complex of the Office of Social Security, for a second day of inspections that are part of the continuing investigations into the deaths of 16 patients who died as a result of becoming infected with the antibiotic resistant Klebsiella Pneumoniae Carbapenemases (KPC) bacteria. Prosecutor Espinosa told TVN news the investigation is in its infancy and just beginning, so he cannot say if a crime has been committed in this case because it has not been proven, nor has he seen all of the evidence. He plans to analyze the medical records and clinical examinations of the 16 people who died. These examinations will be conducted by the Institute of Legal Medicine, which is responsible for analyzing clinical and medical data. Sources within the Public Ministry said they would also conduct inspections at the Ministry of Health and the Gorgas Memorial Institute. (TVN)
