Editor’s Comment: See? Drug traffickers have many problems to overcome. First they have to get their product to market by finding a way to smuggle the drugs from Colombia to the United States or other markets. Those drugs are paid for with cash. So now, the drug traffickers have literally piles and piles of cash money that has to be laundered. Cases like this – where some random dude is busted with suitcases stuffed full of cash – are relatively common in Panama. Drugs North, money South. And it’s also been known forever that the Colon Free Trade Zone is a actually a hotbed of illegal activities related to drug trafficking and money laundering. When it comes to the money, every time the drug traffickers figure out a new way to launder their cash, sooner or later the authorities figure it out and shut it down. Sooner or later they are left sitting on large piles of physical cash which turns out to be practically useless if you can’t spend it.
